kids and nature; a requirement

After reading THIS article I realized my own needs must be met. I don't think it ends in childhood. On many occasions I need that road trip up north to Flagstaff where the air is clean the sky is bright and the trees are green and full. There is a stress release and even, still, a sense of exploration. My partner and I take road trips down backroads and check out lakes and potential camping sites for some time in the future. We go for hikes in town, not as often as either of us would like, just to get a bit of exercise and maybe discover something new? Just a beautiful scenery or a cool spot for a picnic.

Saturday afternoon we spent the afternoon at Papago Park and took the kids rock climbing/hiking. They had a blast and you literally saw their faces light up when 1) they realized where we were going and 2) actually began to experience it. Many times mid week the little ones will ask if we can go to the park (like we used to) and play ball, catch, ride bikes...just get out of the house. Unfortunately, that hasn't been very convenient to pull off. Hence, why I stayed up yesterday and we went for a stroll in the park just to do something different, "away from the things of man" (Joe v. Volcano reference).

In a nutshell, it was a blast for everyone and it just felt good afterward to know we got out for a little while. We've all been busting at the seams to go camping. Weather has been iffy so it's put off for at least another couple of weeks, but I can't wait.

We'll see what comes up and I'll give you guys some pics to marvel at. Hopefully you won't get the chance to because you will be too busy finding some nature of your own to enjoy.

Chew on this...

There was an blurb I was reading about yet another dying art. In today's technological advances and computerized mindset, the symmetry of an artist's efforts on an album are endangered. Tom Petty was recently interviewed in Rolling Stone regarding online sources for downloading single songs at a buck a pop. I, myself have enjoyed this new commodity a lot. Works great for a lot of new stuff that are one-hit wonders or today's pop music. Even checking out a new artist here or there.

I would easily blow $100 a month bare min. on music; first vinyl, then cassettes, cd's, and now I've averaged about $30 a month on single downloads. Considering the money - I've save 70% by purchasing music this way. HOWEVER, have I lost more in the long run?

Many musicians have hidden masterpieces on a record that never see any airtime. You find these little gems by letting the CD shuffle about while your cleaning the house and go "WOW, that's a great song!" Not only that but how many artists do you know or you can think of that place songs strategically on an album that plays a story within the story? If you only read a page of a book do you grasp the whole concept?

Janet Jackson, from the jump (Control, actually) conceived a record that needed to be heard in the whole. She rec'd plenty of air time however if you actually played the entire album you'd find the bigger story - independence, coming into adulthood, the emotions and little hurdles that come up. Take a song on its own and it was good; put it in the mix and it was brilliant. She's done that with EVERY single cd since.

Another example of this is Fleetwood Mac's Rumors. Everyone knows the gossip, drama, and heartbreak surrounding its creation. The buzz that the band was dismembering over the McVie's divorce and Buckingham / Nicks separation. The pain and anger and emotional twists are all there to be heard in the album. Again, each song on it's own stands up against the test of time, no less. But it makes you feel so much more when you play the songs back to back in the order they were intended. Tit for tat, wish you the best, let's be bigger than this - it's all in there.
I still buy CDs now and again. I rarely buy new, mostly go to resale places or Amazon and ebay. I'm still a consumer that looks for the best deal, duh?! But to have the liner notes in hand and the artwork in its case, nothing replaces that - especially a sharpie on a maxell disc.

Where's Doc Spock when you need a good book?!

According to this article, we are on the path of raising (more) spoiled, demanding adults. And after reading it, they're right. One person speaks of 16 year old girls with french manicures and professional blond highlights, not to forget the Coach handbag, Razor cell phone, and J. Choo shoes. This is your typical teenager in 90210...no? This is your typical teenage girl in any high school across the country. Boys are no different. Between the sneakers at $100 + a pop, Guess or Abercrombie clothes, high end electronic toys...you name it...and no one is working folks. These kids drive all day and party all night and due average at best in school and don't worry about who's footing the bill because mom and dad take care of it all.

Who is going to take care of them when they do enter the real world? Assuming not everyone has the inheritence of good ol' Tori Spelling, eventually they will have to do their own dirty work. How will they relate to eachother in relationships with each one expecting the other to dote after them?

The article also mentions some MTV shows. Has anyone seen My Super Sweet 16 ??? This is a gross display of teenage girls you just want to walk up to and slap back to yes ma'am and no sir. They really need a Super Sweet Ass kickin'. Obnoxious and rude and whiny and grossly embarassing.

We already live in an impatient society. Broadband is too slow, microwaves take forever, the fast food line or DRIVE THRU make us crazy...not to mention credit card debt. We are a fast-paced, give it to me know society and we're making the next generation even worse. That's scary! I am guilty of it myself; if I want it I go and get it.

So of course I took this a step further and thought of my own household. Am I providing TOO much for the kids. The two teens have cell phones. However, the phones are more for our convenience than theirs so I don't sweat too much on that one; the flat monthly rate and base phone cost, I still feel safe. For clothes, again we check out clearance racks and shop for sales and on rare occasion "splurge" for the name brand shoes or whatever when we see it on sale or reduced. Again, I feel like we're still on the right path.

Last year the 15 year old (then 14) wanted the Ipod because (you know) everyone has one. She has an MP3 player that is never used but wanted the Ipod. We talked about it and as much as we would have liked to get it we said no. If she wanted it bad enough, between b-day money and Christmas money, she could get it herself. She never bought it. So now I'm feeling pretty arrogant with myself - like yea, I'm a great parenting role model, yada yada.

However, everytime we go to the store I reach for something to bring home for them. When I am out with one or two and they want something I don't think twice about putting it in the cart. Granted I'm not getting them Blackberry's or anything but I like to shop so I buy them stuff they may not need or even want. Is it everything? No, they're a far cry from being lavished upon like a Hilton. But do they "work" for stuff...not really - at least not consistantly or substantially.

As far as the older two when they reach their driving years, we thought it only right they get a part time job (so long as school grades maintain) to cover their insurance and gas. We'll let them use the car to come and go (which is paid for) but they need to be responsible for their costs. Once you taste that freedom, it's the best incentive for maintaining good grades and a job to continue providing it, right?

Their are no manuals on the perfect parent; a lot of opinions in books but nothing concrete. Guess the outcome 20 years later is the final and their are no retakes. So, we'll have to wait and see.

I'm rubber,you're glue...

favorite number!

Hayek is one of six executive producers on "Ugly Betty," debuting Sept. 22 (mark your calendars) on ABC. America Ferrera plays Betty Suarez, a plump, decidedly unhip girl from New York City's borough of Queens who works as an assistant to a fashion magazine publisher.

If I had a Tivo, it would already be set. I've enjoyed Hayeks mainstream films, but even more so, I've really loved her indie projects and heart/soul efforts(like Time of the Butterflies, Frida). She IS such a powerful actor in the industry that puts the quality before the quantity. It's not about the money but what's behind it. Not to say there haven't been some dumpy pictures made (em, Wild West? or Time Code?) but she continues to find ways to NOT play it safe.

GWB = Idiot

In a day and age where every major (and some mom/pop shop) company is requiring ANNUAL sexual harassment awareness, how does the "man" running the country pull of such a dumb ass move??? I didn't care about the cursing near an open mic...I didn't find it offensive and quite frankly just because he's in the oval office doesn't mean he's isn't human...well, anyway-

The SH*T fiasco was just media blitz being a pain in the ass because he IS an easy target but anyone with common sense (there ya go!) knows to keep your hands to yourself in the biz world. Come ON!?

WOW - proves my point...

Lesbian Couple in Marriage Lawsuit Splits

Not that I'm THAT jaded - because I'm not; however these women were together over 10 years but once they signed that paper they lasted two?!

Was it just coincidence or is MARRIAGE the end of MARRIAGE? Don't know - just putting it out there.

The lesbian couple whose lawsuit led to legal same-sex marriage in Massachusetts have announced they have separated.

The Goodridges were among seven gay couples whose lawsuit helped thrust Massachusetts into the center of a nationwide debate on gay marriage. They were married May 17, 2004, the first day same-sex marriages became legal under the court ruling

Their 10 year old daughter was flower girl and she figured prominently in the Goodridges' case. Born via c-section, there were complications. Hillary Goodridge, at the time having no legal relationship with either mom/child, was barred several times from seeing them both.

Now their daughter is more protected because they were provided the right to marry. They have equal rights to care for the child, etc.

UMA???

For years they've droned on about her being a sex symbol...yea, I didn't see it myself. Not that she's unattractive but I just felt they always made more of her than necessary, I guess. Anyway, looking online today I noticed a pick - HOT pick and low and behold it was Ms. Thurman. I stand corrected - my apologies. She's still not my type but for those who do find her so...drool on:

There was an interesting entry for Peace of Mind - the link is to the right (Leesa's words) and in part I thought I'd bring it over to share for those who may miss the point.

There are various questions to determine if you are as interesting in real life as your blog is. One of the issues singled out in this "journey" is, "Do you feel you have an image to maintain from you blog?"

After some thought I think most would have to say yes. For me as well, the answer is yes. I have never lied in my blog, not about who I am or what I believe however I am selective on what I say or how it's said.

I don't share all the details that may translate poorly in text vs if I were to have an actual face to face or a just give and take conversation of some sort. Blogging is, for the most part, one-sided. It can be misunderstood and misread and no one wants to be thought of poorly even if it is done so anonymously.

After taking a moment and thinking about the question it just seemed to open up this huge blogging psyche thing. Still though, it was an excellent point.

Taken from doc muse

1. Had sex with someone ten years older or younger than you? No, I am an admitted ageist (?sp).
2. Drawn from a nude model? No
3. Had sex at a company Christmas party? Does the parking lot count?
4. Had a blind date? NO
5. Slept with a teacher? I wish
Bonus (as in optional): had sex with someone within an hour of meeting them? Classify having sex???

Okay...number 5

I've actually sat on this one for a while because of her age...or at least what I thought was her age. She was born in '76 so I'm only 5 years apart which was a whew! I was feeling pervy, okay?

Anyway, Rachel McAdams, of Notebook, Mean Girls, and more recently Family Stone and Wedding Crashers - is a total cutie. There's something about her I just can't put my finger on. She's grounded (at least from print I've read), she has a sense of humor (wickedly), and is an up and coming actor with amazing talent and timing - considering her age and the projects she's been connected to they are touting her to be a great promise in the industry for years to come.

Like it was mentioned in one particular article some time back; where all of the celebrities (esp. young women) are involved in cat fights, partying, dealing with on/off relationships or engagements - just negative press in general, she's a breath of fresh air and among very few women (in the biz) who are graceful and poetic and promising.

Her celebrity comes from talent and hard work; not tabloid fodder and other bs. Of course, she does somewhat resemble someone I dated...which I didn't realize until I was checking out pics to list here. That was interesting to note...although, in my dating experience much charisma and good character was absent.

Anyway...now I've completed my five (recap):

Salma Hayek
Sarah McLachlan
Susan Sarandon
Sara Ramirez
Rachel McAdams

... hey, no more Ss!

Loser!

I know I never published any pics of NY pride and I do apologize as I've been busy and still haven't even processed the film. I'll make a darn good attempt to do so this week...really!

In other news, a little something I brought home from NY was a couple of hatchling red-ear slider turtles. They're illegal for pet stores to sell anymore...used to raise them all the time as a kid. Well brought two home and lost one this morning. Looks like upper-respiratory, I was really saddened by this and we buried him/her properly. I was worried with that one from the jump as it just didn't eat near as well as the smaller one. I was hoping he was just going through a settling/dormant period but he passed this morning.

So I've been online to determine if the second is in jeopardy. From all that I've read and given its behavior, we are good. Feel bad as he has no playmate so when I go back in September, I'll likely be bringing home another. I've a pond on the side of my home that I dug out and cleaned up however it looks like I'll be digging a new hole and fencing off the area for in about a year or two I'll be housing the turtles there.

I would like to incorporate a box turtle...not tortoises, as they get way too large for my space and definitely too heavy for me to be lifting about. But box turtles; that would be fun. Climate is perfect for it.

After all the research and reading I've done for pond structure etc., I've found my hobby. It was one of mine LONG ago as a grade-schooler. I really enjoyed my box turtles and sliders alike. There's something about creating the garden and pen and making a home and watching nature in motion. Maybe its just this nurturing thing in me, I don't know?

Anywho...as this process gets established, I'll be posting pics to show the progress and how they grow. The two were actually a gift for the 10 year old's b-day. She loved the hermit crabs she'd had for the last few years but when the last two passed she was told by her mom, my partner, no more. I saw those little green faces while we were in the city and pleaded to her sympathetic ear.

I think it will be a lot of fun (not only for me, alright!?) for the 9 and 10 year old to work on this project with me. They'll get to learn about the habitat and watch the turtles develop. I'm certainly looking forward to it, lol.

Thank you

As read here...

"Actress Karina Lombard will appear once again as Marina in the fourth season of Showtime's popular lesbian drama The L Word,..."

Hopefully this breathes enough new life into the show. Last year was VERY difficult to watch. The new character M.. something? was just too brutal to get into. They could have done a MUCH better job at portraying F to M (female to male transexual) than that. Character was just whiny and unappealing; very unsympathetic not to mention the attached "Max" to Jenny which is another horrid character to begin with.

What exactly is all this attitude about??? Perhaps Marina will put her back into place - WELCOME BACK (busting into tears)!!!!!

Again, I thank you.

? tired ?

Ever not like yourself? I mean, really just can't stand yourself and you want to get away from yourself, which obviously you can't, so you just try to avoid everyone and everything?

For the past 4 days or so I am tired of me. It lightened up a bit a little over the weekend but keeps on coming back. I'm truly trying to shake it as I have people in my life that I'm sure to be making miserable about now. Can't do it.

Guess just the last few days it's come on stronger than ever but I just feel like I exist...no purpose, no contribution, nothing worth while just, exist. Feel like I get up and go through the motions day in and day out, night in and night out and nothing changes and nothing gets better and mentally I get worse and there's no light.

I'm in a cycle right now...I need to quit one job; I really do. Problem is if I quit the one I hate I have to replace it with another (perhaps equally bad or worse) to make up the income loss. If I quit the one that I don't hate, I have no way of leaving the job I hate. See, Job #2 is an apprenticeship that still has about 8 mos. before I'm making any decent (livable) money. And that's being pretty optimistic. But burn out is coming on fast and I haven't had any time to mysself.

I want to run away. From me. How do you do that? I need something to fill this vacant hole in me. My partner thought perhaps I was just bored and needed to spice things up and obviously cut back on job #2 but I don't feel that that's going to solve it - nor do I believe that's the problem, perhaps contributory but not THE problem.

So I'm doing some reading to understand me. To like me. To find me. What do I do? Besides work, what are my interests? What do I do to relax? There's been these memes going around and some of these questions are there and I really don't have an answer. I don't do anything to relax. I don't wind down and I don't have any hobbies. I fucking work!

Guess maybe I just miss me. I used to be fun - go to the park, fly a kite, play ball, go to the lake, run around and laugh...

Now... I'm old - this solid, wirey grey hair just keeps looking back at me in the mirror. I'm becoming bitter, and angry, and tense, and tired. It will pass - it's the AZ summer blues because they do hit hard and I was losing my mind this time last year as well. I know this weather, hellish as it IS, contributes greatly. But I also know I do truly need to find myself, spend more time with friends and family and less at work. I was JUST on vacation yet I don't fee like it at all. I know I'm burned out and I need to rectify that as well. I guess this is just a vent in some desperate attempt to release whatever this yuck is within me. I've had a lot of yuck as of late and I don't know that I can wait for September (autumn) for it to dissipate...more importantly - I doubt my family can.

What's a gal to do...? I'm going to Disneyland!

Italy in finals!!!

Due to heritage, I'm going to take a little pride in that Italy has ousted Germany and made finals in the World Cup. But checking out the game and stills, these guys are insane and as mentioned in several commentaries, both teams deserved to be in the final - the guts and glory were everywhere!

OUCH!
The goal that ended the match!

Also, in world of Wimbledon:

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) - Former champion Maria Sharapova and five-time major winner Justine Henin-Hardenne reached the Wimbledon semifinals Tuesday with straight-set victories. Top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo and Kim Clijsters also got there.

Bittersweet indeed...

Anti-gay marriage leader dies
Matthew Benson The Arizona Republic Jul. 4, 2006 12:00 AM

The head of the ballot effort to prohibit gay marriage and define traditional unions in Arizona was killed in a car wreck early Monday. Lynn Stanley, chairwoman of the Protect Marriage Arizona Coalition, died in a crash on Interstate 40 while returning to Phoenix from Las Vegas. A state Department of Public Safety official said Stanley, 58, was killed in a single-car rollover about 6:30 a.m. outside Seligman. Stanley was driving east when her car went into the median and she tried to correct but the car flipped several times, the official said.

Stanley's death cast a pall over what was to be a joyous time for the Protect Marriage coalition. The group collected roughly 300,000 signatures to place its measure on the November ballot. Amending the state Constitution, as the Protect Marriage coalition intends, requires at least 183,917 valid signatures(which is now referred to as a bittersweet "victory" in the movement).

In an opinion piece written for The Arizona Republic in 2005, Stanley said the intent of the ballot initiative is to preserve "the special status of marriage by enshrining the definition of marriage in the state Constitution and preventing any part of Arizona's government from undermining that definition by creating or recognizing marriage counterfeits."

Stanley was a wife of 38 years and longtime Arizona resident, daughter Tracie said. Lynn also was an artist and published author, and taught Bible study classes at Scottsdale Bible Church.
"She was just a good friend to everybody," Tracie said. "She loved my dad more than anything, and her kids."

I posted this because as I read this I was somewhat troubled with my own feelings over the matter. I'm not a sympathetic sort to begin with; if I don't know or didn't know someone, I'm not likely if at all to get emotional over something like this. What disturbed me was a bit of judgment I guess?, that I felt reading this. Like she wasn't a good person anyway to head such a hateful drive over something that in reality shouldn't concern her as it doesn't affect her life. I didn't like that about myself. I feel bad for her family and husband, which fortunately for her, she was able to have and enjoy and love freely and openly. The same life she wanted to void for others...and the last statement of her being a friend to everybody and the bible thumping well, it just seems an obvious contradiction to what she should have represented. I was angry with her.

I don't take issue with someone so much for not agreeing to gay marriage; but to expel the energy to combat something that has no real part in affecting your life; and to claim to be a devout christian to boot - something's wrong.

Anyway, I welcome all feedback. I have no intention of debating this matter and so will not likely respond for argument sake. Just needed to share as my reaction to this sort of left me puzzled and just dark in general, I suppose. Needed to shed it - so, done.

Thanks.
